Dear Sharon ~
Regarding your being at the Beacon on 19 February, 2009 [my birthday was the 20th... Happy Birthday to me seeing Leonard and you perform... and meeting you; thank you for signing my program with such warm and lovely words]; these snippets are what I've written about you on Leonard's Forum:
"I'm not very celebrity conscious, unless they're specific to me, so the only one who suddenly 'owned' the room when I saw her was Sharon Robinson. Her presence and countenance seemed to absorb all the surrounding light and she created her own ambient glow. I, frankly, was in disbelief and I cut short/stopped whatever I was doing to move toward her and wait so I could meet her. I recall too well how I felt when I read how some met her by happenstance out and about at one of the European concerts and it wasn't really jealousy or envy, but such a strong sense of oh, how I wish that I could meet her! And then there she was... with a HUGE and charismatic smile, she engages with people in such a genuine way. It's as if she enjoys the process as much as those who are getting to meet her. As I watched her interact with others, and then with me, I thought what a great lesson Leonard's own humble and grateful encounters with his fans have been for those who have the privilege of traveling with him, those who travel blind. If they weren't already that way or haven't already absorbed how much is gained by graciousness, sincerity, and gratitude, when interacting with admirers, all they need to do is watch him and his impact on those who meet him... and Sharon was the very same. There were [obviously] other band members amidst the crowd, but when I met Sharon, it was a done deal for me. Such a strong woman and one I've admired so much for so long. She's brought so much to Leonard's music world. Another time for whatever others was fine with me. You don't have to reach in to find out who she is... who she is reaches out and wraps itself around you. An amazing woman with such a strong and powerful presence and still so genuine. When I say I love her, well, I just mean I love her! To finally meet her was just So Great! She has the air of an icon about her; with the sincere, warm energy of a friend."
"The one [photo] of Sharon Robinson reminds me of what I thought of, again, as I watched her Thursday night... how, when I went to see Michelle Obama speak in person during the end portions of the campaign, as I watched and listened to her, I thought, 'She's got the Sharon Robinson thing going on... natural, strong, earthy, down-to-earth, sincere, intelligent, genuine, warm, and engaging... glorious, huge smiles and sparkling eyes that glow... they emanate enough light to illuminate a room... a very real, unproduced kind of beauty.' Watching her interact with others during the VIP reception, I thought about how similar her interaction manner was to Michelle's, as I watched Michelle on the rope line after her speech. I came within three people of meeting Michelle [two others between us]... I'm so happy to say that wasn't the case with Sharon. Waiting my turn, I was able to meet her just before she had to depart to go do the show. It's interesting to me that I first compared our First Lady to Sharon, rather than vice versa. Their public selves are very similar... and, with each, their public selves appear to be in sync with their private selves. Both such very 'together' women.
Such classic understatement when I said to Sharon, 'It was very nice to meet you.'"
"Haha... Hydriot. Nor should you. Leonard knows what he's doing.
I was about to inquire of MWaldman and Foxwood on that very thing, but you've obviated the need.
Something in our DNA draws us one way or the other. And, I've never even liked those 'motorcycle key chains' ~ yet, it had its own role to play in Dino's driven movements. What I loved about his body's participation is that it appears it has no choice . Ha. Even his name... Dino Soldo. Very strong. A tight name with soft sounds. Very cool. As a disclaimer, I have to add that I don't normally strongly react to band members's attractiveness. About Leonard's smile, it seems that he gets as big a kick out of Dino's absorption in the music as we do.
While we're at it, though... I didn't notice the gorgeousness of the drummers's face until I saw a photo here and Javier Mas has that ethnic look I love.
Meanwhile, Sharon's body participation is muscle-precise and perfect. Every large and small muscle group in her body is involved and in sync with the rhythms. Taut and smooth... exact. Without fanfare or exaggeration, she replicates the largeness and subtleties of the rhythms in a very contained, well-defined form. It adds to the strength of her presence onstage. Sharon brings SO much to the table.
I've always loved the visuals of any performance. To have all your senses engaged is pure pleasure. Touch wasn't possible, but that's okay. Their performances transcended the need."
"I have no complaints about Leonard's show and how he's determined to arrange it. When Sharon did Boogie Street, I became so lost in it, I failed to remember that ordinarily Leonard would be part of that mix. She 'owned' it [and I can't remember how someone here described her performance of it, but their words were spot on... I think they may have said she delivered it with authority... now there's an understatement]."
"When I wasn't looking at Leonard, I pretty much focused on Sharon and Dino. Leonard got the lion's share, but those two were next. It looks like Mnkyface agrees with us on the admiration."
Sincerely, and with love to you, Sharon, Lizzy[tysh]
P.S. On the first night of the three I saw you in Montreal, I bought your "Everybody Knows" at intermission. Your songwriting and singing are sublime... and I didn't realize until now how many have sung your songs. Mega kudos to you Sharon... and they belong to you, still, even if no one but you had embraced your writing.
